Q.	Why did you start this business?� - Basically, what was the�difference that your startup set out to make in your customer's life/�business?
A.	“They said that the tiger was going to be extinct, the world was going�to become warmer, and theatre was dying - we decide to change at least�one of the things. We refused to believe 'live' storytelling as a� mode of entertainment and passing on culture could ever go out of�fashion. A.	“Good, clean, wholesome 'live' entertainment delivered by a brand was virtually non-existent. With live arts, it's very important to have a�dialogue between the act and the audience,in fact, this is what�differentiates it from cinema. This culture was rapidly vanishing from�the performance arts. sunil evam karthik are different breed of guys!! theatre was their passion and they made it a full blown profession. they have really come a long way since their MICA and Sankalp days. what more they still inspire the art of theatre at campus and the legacy is still on!! we are proud of the guys who really dared to do different things and not get caught in the rat race. their financial numbers are just the surface of it. look at the goodwill and human numbers (patrons) they have been able to generate and you will get the feel of this phenomenon!! all the best EVAM :) dwari < Back

Dear experts, Our orientation towards Financial Discipline and its maintenance has only gotten better with experience(since there is no past precedence in this industry) in our 2008-09 period - with Revenues in the range of 1.3-1.5 Cr and an operating Profit in the range of Rs 30-50 Lacs. The business we believe is all the more Recession proof during this period of general Financial slowdowns what with our Niche-ness and Novelty of offering becoming a stronger draw for us in times of 'selective entertainment' seeking, and at the same time our Brand which stands for Optimism and Happiness helping tide through overall reluctance to spend on Entertainment - the Cinema may suffer, but evam hasn't and is not likely to. This awesome team at Evam take the theatre experience to a different level all togetherl. I have been a regular theatregoer for past 6 years, but ever since i saw evam's play(the first one that i saw was odd couple), its become an addiction. The best part is the humor and the interactiveness with the audience. The crowd also feels that they were part of the play rather than just watching it. I look forward for their next show in the city, which is why i think these guys rock. The effort and the passion behind the each and every scene can be felt. Everyone comes to watch a play so that they can sit, laugh and go back home with a happy feeling.. Which is what these guys offer. < Back

Well I know EVAM just for few months before. I must say, They are extra ordinary. Often I feel desperate if I miss any of their shows, I never seen these people idle, either they run a theatre fest or play around successfully. In a word Epitome for being strong, coz everyone knows where theatre is these daysin Entertainment quotient , but these people had guts yield fruits in it. "Evam Entertainment is an ambitious attempt to overlay a corporate structure on theatre, thus going one step beyond the "Natak-mandlis" that are still ubiquitous across the theatre hotspots in India - Mumbai, Kolkata etc.

However, there are some inevitable questions about the current and future prospects of the endeavour.

First, how scalable is the model? Let us see the numbers - founded 2003; revenues in FY 2006-07 in the Rs 11 to 50 lakhs range; profits in FY 2006-07 in the Rs 1 to 5 lakhs range. Not too impressive for a company founded in 2003.

Second, are the margins sufficient for what is likely to be a high risk/high returns business? Again, the numbers give the answer. Profit as a proportion of revenues -- anywhere between 2% to 45.454% in FY 2006-07; and in FY 2007-08 anywhere between 6% to 29.412%

I suggest that they might like to address the above issues so that they can fulfill their stated societal objectives with financial stability built in."

With the onslaught of television and computers, many predicted the death of the theatre. But in the success of Evam and groups like Ranga Shankara, we see that Indian audiences can be wooed back with new ideas, a passion for theatre and some refreshing performances. The founders seem to be a determined lot and have a good team going for them. They are at a stage where they need to scale up and would do well with some big partnerships, though they already have a few brand associations going.
